The Magnus is a specialist riser recliner chair designed specifically for bariatric patients. The chair has a 450kg (70 stone) weight capacity and an 80 or 90cm seat width. The Magnus provides a comfortable seating solution which encourages the client to stay out of bed for longer periods and helps to remove the obstacles to mobilisation and therapy.

Bariatric patients may be unable to push themselves up and out of the chair either due to a lack of strength in their arms or due to weight obstructing the necessary trunk flexion. The riser function of the Magnus, which tilts and raises the client to standing, helps the client to be independently mobile. This reduces the need for hoists or manual handling assistance, which in turn reduces the risk to both the carers and therapists.

Many bariatric patients have bulk around their stomach and thighs which prevents them from sitting in a standard chair with a 90º hip and knee angle. The backrest recline and elevating legrest functions of the Magnus allow the client to increase the hip and knee angles to create a more comfortable seating position.

Furthermore Tilt-in-Space allows the client’s posture to be easily adjusted. The relationship between seat and back stays the same as the chair is tilted through space. This means that the client’s position can be changed throughout the day for different activities. It also allows for the pressure distribution between the client and chair to be changed, helping to maintain healthy skin tissue in those areas susceptible to damage through pressure.

The rise, recline, Tilt-in-Space and legrest elevation are all controlled by a touch of a button on the easy to use handset.
