Adult Seating in Practice: Participation, Independence and Daily Function
19th November 2026
10.30 am - 11.30 am via Zoom
1.00 pm – 2.00 pm via Teams
Seating plays a fundamental role in supporting adults to carry out everyday activities, maintain independence, and participate in the things that matter most to them. When seating provides the right support, it can positively influence comfort, function, and quality of life.
When seating no longer meets an individual’s needs, challenges such as poor posture, fatigue, discomfort, reduced functional ability, and difficulty engaging in daily activities can begin to impact confidence and wellbeing.
Recognising the signs that seating requirements have changed is an important step towards achieving better outcomes. Specialist seating can help optimise posture, improve comfort, support functional activities, and enable individuals to participate more fully in home, work, and community life.
Learning Objectives
- Examine the role of seating in enabling adults to perform everyday activities and maintain independence.
- Recognise when changes in an individual’s posture, comfort or functional ability may indicate a need for different seating provision.
- Consider how specialist seating can support functional performance and participation across home, work and community environments.
- Develop their clinical decision-making when considering the assessment and prescription of specialist seating for adults.
